The majority of Africa’s kids aren’t getting meaningful learning experiences right now. Despite the effort of Edtech in helping kids learn through the internet, apps and mobile phones, there are still a lot of kids who cannot be reached. In Africa only 19 million of the 450,000,000 children aged 14 or younger are users of edtech, also about  44% of 3-4 years old experienced low cognitive and social emotional development. For the past two years we have been asking ourselves “how might we bring localized edutainment to the hardest to reach and most vulnerable children?”

With the support of the Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF), we’ve spent the last 2 years testing and developing the Ubongo Toolkits.

What are the Ubongo Toolkits? Our content made available to caregivers for their kids, practitioners in education and implementing partners for usability and ease of sharing in their programs.

How are they made available? We distribute toolkits through a web platform, Flash drives/USB,  Google drive and WhatsApp groups.

What is in the Toolkits? Our localised educational resources for kids aged 0 – 14 covering pre-literacy, mathematics, science, social and emotional skills and engineering. They cover a range of media including video, audio and printables.

We have an average of 680 unique users visiting our platform monthly with a total of 4,982 resources downloaded reaching 2,670,279 kids through 207 registered users. The Ubongo Toolkits were also distributed via USB at our Building Brains Conference, where we received a pledge to reach 608,840 kids in different regions in Tanzania ( including Morogoro, Lindi, Arusha, Zanzibar, Mtwara etc) and South Africa!

We’re continuing to bridge the gap through our content one child at a time!
