The Discover Project researches optimal learning experiences that target the “second window of opportunity” for brain development of early adolescence between the ages of 10-12, during which key cognitive processes lay a foundation for actions and behaviors in the rest of life. As part of this project, University of California, Berkeley conducted initial research on Ubongo Kids character strengths episodes from Ubongo Kids season 4. Measures were developed and improved learning outcomes were seen in curiosity, purpose, grit and growth mindset.
In 2020, Discover Learning developed a measure for Utu – an indiginous East African character strength – and conducted further research to measure character strengths. Measures of Curiosity, Purpose, Persistence and Generosity improved significantly from baseline to endline. Utu on its own also showed an improvement in mean score from baseline to endline. Girls showed more significant improvements and the impact of the intervention on gender is the subject of the following paper.
