    Study Summary

This report presents the findings from the endline research for Ubongo, one of the two Cohort 3 businesses selected for the SPRING Impact Evaluation. The evaluation used a quasi-experimental difference-in-differences design to draw conclusions about the impact of the prototype and learning for the SPRING programme.

    Evaluation Objectives:

    • To measure the effectiveness of the Discover Learning intervention in promoting gender equity and SEIL.
    • To understand the experiences of adolescents, caregivers, and community members with the intervention.

    Evaluation Methodology:

    • A phased implementation approach was used to allow for learning and adaptation during testing.
    • The intervention included culturally-relevant, animated videos paired with experiential learning activities.
    • Surveys and in-depth interviews were conducted with adolescents, their parents/caregivers, and teachers before and after the intervention.

    Key Findings:

    • The intervention led to improvements in gender norms, beliefs, and behaviors among participants.
    • Experiential learning activities facilitated healthy gender norms and behaviors.
    • Positive changes were observed not only in adolescents but also in their parents/caregivers.

    Main Takeaways:

    • Early adolescence is a critical window for implementing interventions that can effectively transform gender norms and promote gender equity.
    • Engaging parents, caregivers, and community members is crucial for the success of such programs.
    • The Discover Learning project provides valuable insights into designing scalable interventions that leverage developmental science to enhance social and identity development.
